Over the past couple of months, we have shown off a number of Klingon Ships and Vessels, the Negh’var, the Vorcha, the Bloodlust – all very large, very formidable Klingon Ships. This week, we move to the opposite end of the scale too demonstrate one of the smallest Klingon Ships ever seen – the Quv’leth class Fighter.
Originally commissioned by the Klingon Defence Force in the year 2365, the ship was mothballed after trials on several Klingon Capital Ships proved that there was limited use for such a vessel, however towards the end of the Dominion War and after heavy losses, the Defence Force decided to look at the practicality of some older designs and put this ship into mass production after simulations determined that this design would be highly effective in the war.
The Quv’leth is a one man fighter designed to support larger Klingon Ships such as the Negh’var. In large scale engagements swarms of these vessels would be launched to provide additional close range offense and defence capability with the objective of disrupting enemy formations and creating holes in their defence. While these ships were introduced too late into the Dominion War to see much action, they did prove very effective in the limited capacity in which they were used and the defence force has continued production of the ship in the aftermath of the war.
These vessels have also found an additional use with versions available for purchase by Klingon Freelancers, Bounty Hunters and other such splinter groups.
The Quv’leth contains two high powered, short range disruptor cannons and a micro-torpedo launcher as well as a medium powered shield generator and heavy armour. The ship is highly manoeuvrable at impulse and warp speeds and maintains the general aesthetics of the Bird of Prey.
The Quv’leth was created by Andrew Probert back in 1987 and the design was published in the Starlog Magazine. Using a picture from this magazine, the ship was modelled by LC and Textured by Newman. It contains around 5500 tri’s.
