The following is taken from the ST: Excalibur project website. All information belongs to the developers.
ST Excalibur is a massive project with the intention of creating a new gaming experience which will be open to all trek communities, but just what are the aims and objectives for this ambitious development and how did it all come about?
_____________________________________________________________________
Beginnings:
The concept of ST Excalibur was originally created by LC Amaral (project leader) as a complete overhaul for the very popular Star Trek Bridge Commander. The intention was to create an update for Bridge Commander which literally reached into every facet of the game, including a new single player, a completely new set of ships, and an overhauled interiors system.
As with all projects this ambitious however the team soon started coming up against age-old boundaries in the 5 year old game engine. Due to this the project began looking for a new game engine and in summer 2007 before finally joining forces with NanoFX GE to create a brand new fan game set in the Star Trek Universe.
Objectives:
The objectives of the project are now to create:
1) A fan built ST game open to fans from all communities
2) A modern game taking inspiration from classic trek games like Bridge Commander, Klingon Academy and Starfleet Command.
3) An up-to-date graphical experience which will leave fans truly amazed
4) An easy to modify platform which will remain stable with many modifications installed
5) A new single player campaign taking fans beyond the final frontier.
Remember that a big advantage of creating a new game from scratch is that it opens up the project to ALL trek gaming communities, if you think you can help us then please keep checking the recruitment page for suitable roles or contact one of the team.
Game Play:
ST Excalibur will be similar in style to Bridge Commander; the main game play will be focused on one ship at a time and will allow you to micromanage your ship with easily. However the game play will depart from that established in Bridge Commander in several key ways.
Firstly the “interior view” familiar to players of Bridge Commander will be completely overhauled, whereas before the player camera was fixed in a seated position, in ST Excalibur the player will be able to move around the bridge, and in some cases move around entire sections of the ship including Engineering, Medical and the Brig. On top of this the ability to move around the bridge and ship will be crucial to the game play in order to complete certain objectives.
Secondly the game play will be less oriented around a single ship against many, and will instead be more focused on a small task force which follows your command from a flag ship. This gives the player a more canon experience, as well as the ability to choose how he or she wishes to approach a given situation, whether that be using stealth, aggression or more out of the box thinking.
Finally we are hoping to have a separate game mode to single player in which the user can work through the career of a Starfleet Command Officer, earning better ships and higher ranks based on missions completed.
More details will be released on this site as production continues so be sure to keep an eye on new updates.
